Ein kurzer Ausflug zu den Debian-basierten Distributionen entpuppte sich als problemlos. Ubuntu Linux setzt auf Evolution als PIM. Hier funktioniert die Erkennung und Synchnronisation des Tungsten E auf Anhieb. Unter Tools | Pilot Settings tragen Sie /dev/ttyUSB1 ein (Abb. 6). Im Reiter Conduits müssen Sie anschließend die entsprechenden Hilfprogramme zur Synchronisation auswählen, hier sind standardmäßig alle deaktiviert. Ärgerlich allerdings, dass auch hier die Umlaute nicht funktionierten. Wer auf ernsthafte Schwierigkeiten beim Synchronisieren stößt, sollte überprüfen, ob das Paket pilot-link vorhanden ist und gegebenenfalls über Synaptic oder apt-get install pilot-link nachinstallieren. Eine kurzes Howto für den offensichtlich störrischeren Zire 31 ist auf [6] zu finden.

Conduits:
Hilfsprogramme zur Sychronisation bestimmter Datentypen zwischen PDA und PC. Für die Synchronisation von Kontaktdaten, To-Do-Listen, Kalendereinträgen, Dateien und so weiter ist jeweils immer ein bestimmtes Conduit verantwortlich.

conduits for gnome-pilot 
This package contains conduits for the gnome-pilot Palm PDA applet. It
adds expense, memo, time, email, and MAL (mobile application link) sync
functionality to gnome-pilot.

- gnome-pilot
A GNOME applet for management of your Palm PDA 
gnome-pilot is a GNOME applet with a daemon that monitors for
connections from a PalmOS-based device. It features a conduit
system, although it contains only basic conduits.

gnome-pilot-conduits is recommended for a full set of conduits.

pilot-link is used to make the connection to the device, and as
such, this package should work with serial devices, USB devices
given proper kernel support, and with XCopilot. See the package
documentation or pilot-link's documentation for more information
on configuring various types of interfaces.

- kpilot
KDE Palm Pilot hot-sync tool 
KPilot is an application that synchronizes your Palm Pilot or similar device
(like the Handspring Visor) with your KDE desktop, much like the Palm HotSync
software does for Windows.  KPilot can back-up and restore your Palm Pilot
and synchronize the built-in applications with their KDE counterparts.

This package is part of KDE, and a component of the KDE PIM module.

tools to communicate with a PalmOS PDA
The package contains many command line programs to manipulate databases
stored on a PalmOS PDA. For example pilot-xfer can be used to backup,
sync, and restore databases.
