Most people use the 'dvdbackup' tool in conjuction with the 'libdvdcss' and 'libdvdread' packages to create a mirror image of the DVD Video structure without CSS encryption. Then burn that structure to a dual-layer DVDR. All three packages exist in the dries yum repo. Those who wish to compress a DVD9 to a DVD5 use DVDShrink running under Wine (the Windows emulator) to compress and tweak the video structure to the correct size. DVDShrink is currently the best tool for the job and has no Linux couterpart - but it is free. Other useful tools are 'mkisofs' for creating DVD compatible ISO images. 'growisofs' for CLI dvd burning. 'vobcopy' is an older cousin of dvdbackup. K3B, xcdroast, Graveman, etc are all capable of burning DVD videos (if properly configured). A few people may wonder why I didn't mention some of the other Linux tools and scripts commonly used to copy dvd movies to DVDR. While they do work - they don't hold a candle to DVDShrink. The Linux DVD9-DVD5 tools can't handle menus, multiple titles, languages or subtitle streams, etc. In effect, they aren't really 'backup' tools. to install the tools: ===================== Code: yum --enablerepo=dries install dvdbackup libdvdcss libdvdread Then install Wine. There are FC3 rpms on the Wine website: http://www.winehq.com/site/download They may also work for FC4, but I recommend installing the WineCVS version. Once Wine is installed, you can download DVDShrink from: http://files.dvdr-digest.com/encode...rink32setup.zip Code: unzip dvdshrink32setup.zip wine dvdshrink32setup.exe That will install DVDShrink and probably leave a shortcut on your desktop. ----- The process: - Put a DVD movie in your drive (/dev/dvd for example) - Create a work dir (~/dvdbackups) - Backup the movie and create an ISO file for DVDShrink to use Code: mkdir ~/dvdbackups; cd dvdbackups dvdbackup -M -i /dev/dvd -o ./ mkisofs -dvd-video -V"DVD_TITLE" -o dvdtitle.iso DVD_TITLE/ rm -rf DVD_TITLE/ - Open DVDShrink and choose the "Open Disc Image" from the "File" menu - Open dvdtitle.iso - Adjust the DVDShrink title and compression options to your liking - Hit the "Backup" button - Choose to output the result to an ISO image - Wait approx 3 hours for the recompression to finish - Burn the new ISO to DVDR It's a start. ------------------------------------------------- You will have more luck at one of these forums they deal with problems and issues all the time. You compress 4gig down to either 1 or 2 cd with 700mb each. Are they watchable yes are they sharp no.
